Portraiture and The Gaze
Artist's statement
The photographic art world often plays host to the construction and direction of portraiture. We expect, when viewing a portrait of a person to see the persons face, and to therefore engage in a 'gaze'. If this expectation is not fulfilled then we as the viewer feel a sense of unease and bewilderment. I have set out to experiment with this notion of an indexical shift with the desire to play with the suggestion of the 'gaze'.
